- He likes to work out with me on occasion. His specialties are jumping jacks and squats.
- He can blow his nose. No more bulb syringe!
- He knows to say cheese and smile in front of a camera. I catch him putting my phone up to his face and saying “cheese” all the time! Perhaps I take a few too many pictures.
- He loves to nap on the couch, completely surrounded by covers. He will not share the blanket with anyone else. And he is not happy if he wants to “nap” and you are in his spot on the couch. He is a grumpy ol’ man already…stuck in his ways.
- He likes to boss Macey around. I can’t tell you how many times a day I hear “Come on, Macey.”, “hop up”, “Move, Macey.”, “Walk, Macey.”
- He loves to sing. I love hearing him in the backseat humming along to the radio!
- He insists that every drink be on a coaster. I laugh every time he puts his sippy cup on the table and then says “no, coaster” as he searches for one. My coffee table loves him.
So, if you are breastfeeding or entertaining the idea of breastfeeding, here are my words of advice:
1. Do your research. Talk to other moms, search the internet, and read a book or two. I strongly recommend The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and kellymom.com. These were my go-to resources for nearly every question I had.
2. Don’t listen to negative “advice”. How you feed your child is your decision. Do what is right for your family. (This applies to formula-feeding mom’s as well!) If you let them, the Negative Nelly types can really get under your skin and make you second guess your choices. Don’t let them!
3. Find positive and encouraging influences. These may be other moms, your spouse, nurses, or lactation consultants. Find someone you can talk to on a rough day. This helps more than anything else!
4. Most importantly, don’t beat yourself up if it is harder than you expect. Or if you end up going a different route. A happy family with a formula-fed baby or exclusively pumping is much better than mom and baby being frustrated all the time. You are a great mom no matter what!
This kid has no fear and took on the ocean like it was a puddle. If a waved knocked him down he, quite literally, rolled with it and grinned ear to ear. Then he was back up to do it all again. One of my favorite moments from the week was when he was standing in the edge of the surf, he threw his hands up and yelled “more water!” as the waves sank back into the ocean. I think that sums up how he feels about the ocean.
One rainy afternoon, when we couldn’t play on the beach, Cullen caught his first fish. Mom and I were out shopping when I received this picture of Cullen and his fish. The look on his face is priceless; he is so proud of himself and his fish (rightfully so!) Weeks later he still grins ear to ear and tells you how big his fish was when you ask.
There is not much else that can beat a week at the beach with family and not a care in the world. It was a great trip, and we are already looking forward to next year!
Last year, on Cullen’s first beach trip, we started a tradition of taking a family picture every year at the beach. I really love how some of these turned out this year, and can’t wait to get them in frames.
Cullen went to bed as the sun started to set, and the rest of us got the fire pit going to enjoy some smores and neighborhood fireworks.
Before everyone left, we pulled out some sparklers for some last minute fun. All of the big kids men got in on the action and let me play around with my camera while they danced around played with the sparklers in a manly way. LOVE was the only four letter word we could come up with, but the picture turned out pretty great! (For a first attempt especially.) Maybe Cullen will stay up long enough to enjoy the sparklers and fireworks next year.
I love any excuse to have everyone over, and this holiday is always a great time of food, fun, and celebration! How did you spend your July 4th?
Our little boy is definitely not a baby anymore. At seventeen months old, he is growing up way to fast. He thinks he is too big for a high chair, thinks he can go up and down the stairs himself, thinks he is too big for naps, knows how to tell us exactly what he wants and knows where everything is (mostly snacks), and repeats everything we say.
Cullen’s favorite activities these days are going to the pool, where he desperately wants to play with the big kids and flirts with all of the teenage girls, searching for bugs, eating popsicles, jumping on the couch cushions, and playing outside as much as possible.
Aside from the few temper tantrums we are forced to endure, and the joys of teething, this is a really fun age. Cullen is so much fun to be around. He has the most infectious laugh and we have the best time playing together. I love the little boy that he is becoming. He is smart, bold, sweet, and loving. His wrinkled-nose, whole-face smiles are my favorite, and he can brighten even the grayest of days. I hope the memories we are making now stay with us forever!
We had a couple rough weeks thanks to some pretty painful teething. I’ve always heard that the canine teeth were the worst, but I had no idea. There have been a couple occasions that he has just rolled around in pain. I was called out of church one Sunday because he was completely inconsolable in the nursery. No amount of popsicles, teethers, or snuggles from his uncle and aunt could calm him down. Even I could not comfort him. It absolutely broke my heart to see him in such pain. Hopefully the worst is over and those stubborn teeth will finally pop through the gums soon.

He has finally started waving ‘bye’ and it absolutely one of the sweetest things ever! And lately he has been stuck on ‘Mommy’. Not that he wants my attention any more than usual, he just repeats ‘Mommy’ over and over and over throughout the day. The way he says it melts my heart!
This little boy owns my heart. He makes long work days worth it, and he can always put a smile on my face. We have so much fun keeping up with his infectious personality. I wish I could keep him this little forever, but at the same time, I can’t wait to see who he grows up to be.
I love you Cullen, with all of my heart!
